PINELLAS PARK MAN FALLS OFF SUV HOOD, DIES

WEBSTER

A Pinellas Park man died early Sunday after riding on the hood of a sport utility vehicle in Sumter County, authorities said. About 3 a.m., Brian J. Bodlak, 32, was on the hood of the Chevrolet Suburban with Erik A. Mackus, 21, of Palm Harbor, heading east on SW 121st Avenue west of SW 50th Boulevard near Webster when Bodlak fell off. He died at the scene, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The driver, Jessica McCall, 32, of Pinellas Park, and two children, ages 1 and 4, also in the SUV were not injured, the patrol said. The Florida Legislature passed a law in 2010 outlawing riding on the exterior of a car. The incident remains under investigation.

Crash into pole kills one in car

One person died early Sunday after a car struck a utility pole, police said. The crash occurred about 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of W Hillsborough and N Gomez avenues. The name of the victim and circumstances of the crash have not been released.

Fire forces folks from condo tower

Fire crews said they evacuated the 32-story SkyPoint downtown condo tower early Sunday after the report of a fire. The fire was contained to one unit on the 27th floor of the building at 777 N Ashley Drive, authorities said. No one was injured in the fire, which was reported just after midnight.
