Hernando County school superintendent-to-be Lori Romano and the district's negotiating team have reached an impasse in the superintendent's ongoing contract negotiations.
On Tuesday, the School Board will come together in a specially convened afternoon meeting to discuss the discrepancy, said School Board president Matt Foreman, who is spearheading the contract talks.
"You know, we had a good negotiating session, but it didn't result in a contract at this point," he said. "I think it's prudent to bring it back to the board to discuss where we're at."
Foreman declined to say how far apart the two proposed contracts were following their face-to-face meeting.
"We were close," he said. "In order to reach a deal at the meeting, we were going to have to step past a compensation package that I was comfortable with."
After Tuesday's discussion, the board could vote to extend a contract offer to Romano.
Romano and the district have had a lot of ground to cover from their first contract offers.
Romano initially asked for the maximum advertised salary of $130,000, including performance-based pay increases and a bevy of other benefits not included in the district's initial offer.
The district has offered Romano an annual salary of $101,000, near the bottom of the advertised salary range. The minimum was $100,000.
That offer would make her the highest-paid employee in the district, but only by about $200.
