LECAVALIER, HARTNELL HURT IN FLYERS' LOSS

Times wires

PHILADELPHIA - Despite a season-high 37 shots, the Flyers' inability to generate offense continued in a 2-1 loss to the Coyotes on Friday night.

Max Talbot scored the lone goal for the punchless Flyers, who have only six goals this season and dropped to 1-4.

Not helping: The Flyers lost two proven scorers against Phoenix. Forwards Vinny Lecavalier (lower body) and Scott Hartnell (upper body) left the game with injuries and didn't return. General manager Paul Holmgren said both will be out at least a week and were to have MRI exams today.

"Well, it's tougher, but it doesn't matter, does it?" said Flyers coach Craig Berube, in his second game after replacing fired Peter Laviolette this week. "I mean, we've got to win hockey games. People will come in and fill in for them."

Lecavalier has one of the Flyers' goals and two assists. But Hartnell, a former All-Star, is pointless, as is captain Claude Giroux, also a former All-Star and who averaged a point per game last season.

"It is more difficult to see the guys struggling to score now," said goalie Steve Mason, who played another strong game with 29 saves. "Everybody cares so much."

Game highlights: Brad Boyes scored two goals, Tomas Fleischmann had a goal and three assists, and the host Panthers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Penguins. Jeff Zatkoff was the losing goalie in his NHL debut. ... Tyler Seguin had two goals and two assists to lead the Stars over the host Jets 4-1. ... The Devils (0-2-3) have lost their first five games for the first time with a 3-2 loss to the host Flames.

Around the league: Canucks defenseman Alex Edler was suspended three games for a check to the head of Sharks forward Tomas Hertl on Thursday. Edler, suspended for charging last season, is considered a repeat offender. ... Sabres wing Patrick Kaleta will have an in-person hearing with the league Tuesday for a hit to the head of Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson on Thursday. He is suspended until then and will miss two games. An in-person hearing means a suspension, if assessed, could exceed five games. Kaleta is considered a repeat offender. He was suspended five games last season for a hit from behind that sent Rangers center Brad Richards into the boards. ... Canadiens captain Brian Gionta was expected to miss today's game against the Canucks for family reasons, and coach Michel Therrien said he didn't know when the wing would return. Gionta had rejoined the team Tuesday after attending to what the team called a "family emergency."
