KANSAS CITY, Kan. - As World Cup qualifying matches go, there was little to see here Friday. The United States had already clinched its place in Brazil next summer. Its opponent, Jamaica, was all but eliminated from contention.
Though U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann was surely pleased to see his team win 2-0 - Graham Zusi and Jozy Altidore scored in the second half - the primary focus for all games until the summer is auditioning players.
Klinsmann gave Landon Donovan a pointed reminder of that when he pulled Donovan from the game at halftime after a lackluster first half (Zusi replaced him). Klinsmann gave no indication that removing Donovan was related to anything other than performance.
Donovan acknowledged he played poorly but said he was stunned to have been benched. The two discussed the decision after the game. When asked about the conversation, Donovan said, "We'll keep that private."
