The 2-year-old son of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson died Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D., from injuries sustained in a beating, police said. Police did not release the boy's name, but Peterson's father, Nelson Peterson, told the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press the child was Adrian's. The boy had been in critical condition in a Sioux Falls hospital since the beating Wednesday, police said. Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, was arrested on aggravated assault charges Thursday and made his first court appearance Friday. He is being held on $750,000 bail. The Lincoln County State Attorney's office now will consider additional charges, police said. Patterson is the boyfriend of the child's mother and had been caring for him alone at the time of the beating, police said. The mother has not been identified. The death was announced after Vikings practice, at which Peterson had said he would play Sunday against the Panthers. Later on Twitter he thanked family, fans and players for their support.
