L.A. STAR RAMIREZ OUT, IFFY FOR GAME 3

Times wires

ST. LOUIS - Star SS Hanley Ramirez was a late lineup scratch for the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series because of sore ribs that hindered his swing, and his availability was in doubt for Game 3.

Manager Don Mattingly learned X-rays were negative during Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Cardinals, which put Los Angeles down 2-0 in the best-of-seven series.

"I don't know what that means at this point," Mattingly said. "If he can move and be able to swing the bat, then he'd be able to play.

"So, I don't know where that's going to go."

A CT scan was scheduled for today, a day off for both teams. Ramirez was hit by a pitch in the ribs in the first inning of Game 1.

"It hurts," Ramirez said. "We just want to make sure we do everything we can do to fix it."

Ramirez batted .500 (8-for-16) in the Division Series against the Braves, tying the NLDS record with six extra-base hits, with a homer and six RBIs.

Also, OF Andre Ethier was out with lingering soreness after making his first postseason start in Game 1 and playing 13 innings in centerfield. Ethier struck out pinch-hitting to end the game.

Earlier in the day, Mattingly had described Ramirez as "iffy" and a gametime decision. Not long after Ramirez made a leaping catch on a soft liner by Matt Holliday in the bottom of the first Friday night, he was bent over in the dugout and getting medical attention.

Ramirez said the decision was made at the "last minute."

NO TAG, NO PROBLEM: Dodgers C A.J. Ellis said home-plate umpire Gerry Davis was right to call teammate Mark Ellis out on a critical play at the plate Friday, even though it appeared that Cardinals C Yadier Molina never applied a tag.

RF Carlos Beltran's throw reached Molina well ahead of a home-plate collision, but replays indicated that Molina's glove never touched the baserunner.

"In the history of baseball, no one has ever been called safe on that play because they didn't tag them," A.J. Ellis told the Los Angeles Times.

Noting that such a play would be subject to a replay challenge next year, he added, "That would be a shame for a great defensive play like that, the great throw by Carlos, and great play by Yadier at the plate to be overturned because of a technicality that he didn't graze him with the glove."

Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright agreed: "The fact of the matter is if you run over the catcher and the guy holds on to the ball, you've been out since 1888."

LEYLAND PEEVED: Tigers manager Jim Leyland certainly wasn't a fan of the Fox crew about two hours before Saturday night's ALCS opener.

With a light drizzle falling and the Red Sox taking batting practice, the Tigers skipper noticed a large amount of the dugout was taken up by Fox personnel.

"You're going to have to move that when the players come out," he said. He later said, "What is this, a TV studio or a dugout?"

TIGERS ADD COKE: LHP Phil Coke was added to Detroit's ALCS roster after missing the Division Series with elbow problems. Coke struggled this season, posting a 5.40 ERA, but gives the right-heavy Tigers a left-handed option. RHP Luke Putkonen was left off the ALCS roster.

LYNN GETS NOD: RHP Lance Lynn will start Game 4 of the NLCS for the Cardinals, perhaps strengthening his case when he earned the win in Friday's Game 1. Rookie RHP Shelby Miller had also been considered.
