MAPLE LEAFS EFFICIENT IN KEEPING UP HOT START

Times wires

TORONTO - Mason Raymond had two goals and James Reimer made 36 saves as the Maple Leafs beat the Wild 4-1 on Tuesday.

Toronto scored four goals on only 14 shots.

The Leafs improved to 6-1-0, continuing their best start since 1993, when they opened with 10 straight wins.

Because of penalties, the Wild spent more than a quarter of the first period on the power play. That meant Reimer faced plenty of shots and was the Leafs' best penalty-killer.

Minnesota goaltender Darcy Kuemper struggled with little action.

The Leafs scored on their first shot, a tic-tac-toe passing play from Cody Franson to Dave Bolland to Tyler Bozak that Kuemper couldn't stop at 4:24 of the first. Then Trevor Smith beat the Wild's No.3 goaltender between his legs at 13:51 of the first on Toronto's third shot.

Raymond took advantage of a penalty called on Wild forward Nino Niederreiter to score Toronto's second power-play goal on just its seventh shot at 12:23 of the second. At that point, Kuemper's night was over. It was Wild coach Mike Yeo's hope that, with starter Niklas Backstrom still not ready to return from a knee injury, he could give Josh Harding a rest.

Harding came in and stopped all six shots he faced.

Toronto's James van Riemsdyk was scratched because of an undisclosed injury that forced him to leave the morning skate early.

Game highlights: Marcus Foligno's goal tied it with 2:01 left in regulation and Ryan Miller stopped John Tavares in the final round in the shootout to give the visiting Sabres their first win, 4-3 over the Islanders. Buffalo had tied its club-record skid to start a season, seven. ... Patrick Sharp scored in the shootout after collecting his 200th career goal, helping the visiting Blackhawks claim their 2,500th regular-season victory, 3-2 over the Hurricanes. ... Ryan Kesler scored the second of his two goals with 2:25 left in the third as the visiting Canucks topped the Flyers 3-2. ... Jonas Gustavsson stopped 36 shots and longtime Senators star Daniel Alfredsson scored his first goal with Detroit as the host Red Wings held off the Blue Jackets 2-1.

Sabre suspended: The league suspended Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta for 10 games for an illegal check to the head of Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson last week. The ban will cost Kaleta $152,439 in salary.

Around the league: Capitals forward Jason Chimera was fined $4,487.18 - the most allowed under collective bargaining - for a hit on Oilers defenseman Justin Schultz on Monday. ... Rangers goalie Martin Biron and forward Arron Asham were assigned to AHL Hartford after clearing waivers. ... Blue Jackets forward Matt Calvert had abdominal surgery and is expected to be out for about six weeks.
