No one's going to call it investment art, but it is fun art, feel-good art and surprise art. At Five by Five on Friday, $25 will get you a small, square work by an artist whose name you will learn only after you take possession of the art. The fundraiser benefits the Arts Council of Hillsborough County and its grants and workshop programs.
Actually, the entire event, which is at the Tampa Museum of Art, is fun, feel-good and surprising. More than 700 pieces of art, measuring 5 inches by 5 inches, have been donated and cover the media map: painting, drawing, print, sculpture, jewelry, clay, mosaic, glass, photography, fabric and mixed media. Most of the work comes from our region but among the 458 artists are those from across Florida, the United States and around the world. You peruse, make a selection, plunk down you cash or credit card and then you get to turn the work over and see who created and signed it. Those with lots of hours racked up at galleries and arts festivals will probably be able to guess some of the artists from visual clues or signature styles.
More high fives for lots of entertainment from musicians, actors, poets and dancers who each get five minutes in the spotlight. You're going to get hungry and thirsty looking at all that art so nosh on a $5 snack menu and slake your dry throat with a $5 cocktail menu at the museum's Sono Cafe (run by Mise en Place).
Tickets are $10, which gives you access to the museum's exhibitions. Right now there are four: "Arp, Calder and Miro: Modern Masters from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery"; "Fragile Waters" (with lots of Ansel Adams photographs; the film "Sea of Tranquility"; and works from the permanent collection exploring the idea of the portrait in art. They're all terrific. If you're a museum member, no charge.
