Damon Danterius Ford, 20, is jailed in the death of Caleb Scott, 21, of St. Petersburg.

Police arrested a 20-year-old man Wednesday who they said shot another man at a gas station earlier this month.

Officers found Damon Danterius Ford at the Hilltop Motel in Clearwater Wednesday afternoon. When Ford answered the door he looked different than he had weeks earlier in the video surveillance camera at the gas station where Caleb Scott, 21 was shot. Ford had shaved his dreadlocks and when officers asked who he was, he first gave a false name. But on his forearm was a tattoo reading D Ford, police said.

On Oct. 4, the surveillance footage at a BP station on 2753 Fifth Ave. S recorded Ford entering the store at night beside Scott, also of St. Petersburg. Ford wore a white tank top, a hat, and held open the door as Scott walked inside, police said.

Ford is recorded saying something to Scott, who then turns to face him. Customers inside and out turned their attention to the two arguing in the doorway and seconds later, police said, Ford pulled a handgun and shot Scott "multiple times" in the chest.

Ford dropped his hat and ran off, accompanied by a woman in a pink dress, officers said. Scott, the youngest in a family of nine children who was studying to become a nurse, died on the ground.

Authorities booked Ford at the Pinellas County Jail on a first-degree murder charge.
