LATE GOAL GIVES BRUINS WIN OVER THOMAS, PANTHERS

Times wires

SUNRISE - Reilly Smith scored the winning goal with 59 seconds left in the game and the Bruins, facing former franchise goalie Tim Thomas for the first time, beat the Panthers 3-2 on Thursday night.

Smith backhanded the puck into the net between Thomas' legs after a faceoff in the Panthers' zone.

Thomas, who spent his first eight seasons with Boston and backstopped it to the 2011 Stanley Cup, joined the Panthers in the offseason as a free agent. He left the Bruins following the 2011-12 season and took last season off.

Thomas returned to the lineup after hurting his groin against the Flyers on Oct. 8.

Dougie Hamilton and Daniel Paille also scored for the Bruins, and Tuukka Rask, who played with Thomas in Boston, made 27 saves.

Jesse Winchester and Kris Versteeg scored for the Panthers, and Thomas stopped 37 shots.

Trailing 2-1, the Panthers tied it at 2 with six minutes left in the third on Winchester's goal.

After the Panthers won a faceoff in the Bruins' zone, Nick Bjugstad took a shot on goal. Rask blocked it but lost control of the puck. It drifted in front of the crease, and Winchester took a couple whacks at it before poking it in.

Florida closed within 2-1 in the second period when Versteeg took a pass from Jonathan Huberdeau in the right circle and wristed the puck past Rask at 12:32.

Around the league: The Oilers' Taylor Hall broke a team record held by Wayne Gretzky, scoring twice in eight seconds of the first period, but the host Islanders ended up with a 3-2 win. Gretzky scored twice in nine seconds in a 1981 game. ... Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist as the Penguins beat the host Flyers 4-1. Philadelphia fell to 1-7-0, the worst start in franchise history after eight games. ... The Hurricanes got the winner in a 3-2 victory over the host Maple Leafs on a controversial sequence. With the puck headed to the boards behind Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier, he didn't play it, expecting icing to be called under the new hybrid icing rule. It wasn't, and the puck deflected off the boards and his right skate and into the net. Also, Toronto lost goalie James Reimer to an injury 32 seconds into the game when he collided with a teammate. Coach Randy Carlyle said Reimer, who has a history of head and neck injuries, had a headache but was expected to practice today. ... Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall was taken off on a stretcher after a hit into the boards by the Avalanche's Cody McLeod 2:17 into the game at Denver. Kronwall had a concussion and ear cuts but was moving all extremities, the team said. He wasn't taken to a hospital.

Around the league: Rangers captain Ryan Callahan is out three to four weeks after breaking a thumb blocking on shot on his final shift in a 2-0 win over the Capitals on Wednesday. ... Jets wing Evander Kane is day to day, coach Claude Noel said, after getting tangled with teammate Anthony Peluso along the boards in practice Wednesday and being helped off the ice favoring his right leg.
