Host Tampa Bay Tech played sloppily at times. But the defense was stout, and the offense did just enough.
"We definitely could have played a lot better," TBT quarterback Deon Cain said. "We didn't go hard every play, but we'll get that fixed Monday at practice."
TBT lost two fumbles, committed 18 penalties and saw a player ejected for throwing a punch. Nevertheless, the win moved the Titans to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in Class 7A, District 7 ahead of tough district matchups in the next two weeks, against Gaither and Sickles.
Cain finished 11-of-21 for 169 yards and a pair of touchdown. Both strikes (39 and 31 yards) came on go-routes to freshman Daquon Green (three receptions for a game-high 89 yards).
"He's 6-foot-2, and I knew their corner couldn't cover him," Cain said of Green. "I saw they didn't have a safety over the top to help, and he got off the jam good. He's going to be a special player."
TBT held Freedom (1-6, 0-3) to 86 yards rushing and 78 passing. The Titans also recorded four sacks, including a pair from Bruno Jean, and a safety.
It lost the shutout on the game's final play, when Heath Grady connected from 46 yards.
