For his managerial contributions as a fundraiser, organizer and board member or executive to a local nonprofit for at least five years, the Homeless Emergency Project's board chairman, Bruce Fyfe, was selected as the winner of the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation's Community Service Award.

One of 300 nominees from around the country, Fyfe accepted the award at the Invest In Others Community Leadership Awards on Sept. 19 in New York City. He was also part of the group that rang NASDAQ's closing bell Sept. 20.

"We are thrilled that Bruce won this prestigious award. To be chosen as an Invest In Others finalist is an honor in itself, and the other finalists had equally impressive philanthropic backgrounds," said HEP President and CEO Barb Green. "We are blessed to have him as a part of our board. A true pillar of the community, Bruce is deserving of this award and we are very proud of him."

Fyfe began his advocacy for the less fortunate as a HEP volunteer in 1992 and was named chairman of the organization that same year. In addition to his affiliation with HEP, he has served as the past chairman of the Morton Plant Mease Foundation, Morton Plant Mease Hospital and past president of Pinellas Habitat for Humanity.

During his tenure, Fyfe helped establish HEP West Apartment Community, a 32-unit complex for homeless veterans returning home from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Many suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other side effects of war, as did Fyfe's son, Brendan Macdonald Fyfe, a three-tour combat Marine who died from a drug overdose in 2009 at age 24. A memorial fund in Brendan's name was established to help returning veterans in need of assistance.

The $20,000 that HEP will receive from Invest in Others will support the expensive recovery for two men or women struggling with mental illness caused by war.

Fyfe lives in Dunedin with his wife, Wanda.

Achieva Credit Union recently distributed $25,000 to the Pinellas Education Foundation in support of its teacher classroom grant program. Eighteen Pinellas County teachers were awarded up to $2,000 to help support financial literacy in their classrooms.

North Pinellas recipients are Kylie Aliberto, Clearwater High; Stephanie Mikule,Largo Middle; Cathy Baldock, Countryside High; Jennifer Leggio,Highland Lakes Elementary, Palm Harbor; Christie Murray,Morgan Fitzgerald Middle, Largo; and Katie Davis,Fuguitt Elementary, Largo.

The funds were collected from Achieva Credit Union's third annual Box Car Rally last year. Funds raised from this year's event, which took place Oct. 5 in Clearwater, will be given out next year.

Established in 1986, the Pinellas Education Foundation mission is to enhance and improve educational opportunities in Pinellas County Schools. In addition to teacher classroom grants, the foundation's programs include Enterprise Village, Finance Park, Take Stock in Children scholarships and Youth Connect.
