Sen. Marco Rubio on Fox News Sunday continued to assert that Democrats, not Republicans, forced the government shutdown. But the Florida Republican, who joined with Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee to push to defund Obamacare, conceded there are "lessons to be learned," from the messy, failed effort.
"In hindsight, in any endeavour that one gets in, there are lessons to be learned," Rubio said, adding the GOP must be unified going forward to see success on numerous issues.
Rubio also came out in support of Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader who is facing a tea party challenge in his 2014 re-election campaign. "I do support Sen. McConnel's re-election," Rubio said. The Senate Conservatives Fund PAC on Friday endorsed a tea party challenger to McConnell, saying he failed to fight Obamacare.
On immigration, Rubio stands by the Senate plan he helped write but sounds less strident than before, and notes the difficulty in the House.
