KNICKS KEEP UP PUSH FOR PLAYOFFS BY ROUTING NETS

Published Apr. 3, 2014

Times wires

NEW YORK - J.R. Smith had 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and Carmelo Anthony 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Knicks beat the Nets 110-81 on Wednesday.

New York's 12th victory in 15 games combined with Atlanta's loss to put the Knicks in the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference by percentage points.

The Knicks made 24 of 36 shots in taking a 63-38 halftime lead. They finished at a season-high 60 percent and outrebounded the Nets 41-23.

The Knicks have little room for error. All seven of their remaining games are against playoff-bound teams, including at the Nets in their next-to-last game.

Joe Johnson scored 16 for Brooklyn, which had won three straight. It clinched a playoff berth Tuesday. Wednesday it fell 21/2 games behind Toronto and Chicago for homecourt advantage in the first round.

Magic falls: Dion Waiters scored 26 and Spencer Hawes and Tristan Thompson 20 each as the visiting Cavaliers beat the Magic 119-98. Hawes and Waiters combined to make 7 of 10 3-pointers in a game that was not close after the first quarter. Cleveland has won five of six to remain in playoff contention.

Game highlights: Marcin Gortat scored 22 as the host Wizards beat the Celtics 118-92 and clinched their first playoff berth since 2008. ... Paul George had 27 points and 13 rebounds as the host Pacers ended a three-game skid, 101-94 over the Pistons. George's 35-foot 3-pointer gave Indiana a 94-90 lead with 3:19 left. ... Kevin Love had 24 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists for his third career triple double, and the host Timberwolves beat the Grizzlies 102-88. Memphis fell to ninth in the Western Conference. ... DeMar DeRozan scored 29 as the Raptors beat the Rockets for the seventh straight time at home, 107-103. Houston, which has lost three straight after winning five straight, could have clinched a playoff berth with a win thanks to the Grizzlies' loss. ... D.J. Augustin scored 23, and a 16-3 second-quarter run helped the visiting Bulls beat the Hawks 105-92. ... Al Jefferson had 25 points and 10 rebounds to help the visiting Bobcats beat the 76ers 123-93 and move closer to a playoff berth.

Officials' error: The league said a blocked shot by the Warriors' Jermaine O'Neal of the Mavericks' Monta Ellis with 16 seconds left in overtime Tuesday was goaltending. The score was tied. Officials did not call goaltending, and Golden State won on Stephen Curry's ensuing basket with 0.1 seconds left. The loss left Dallas a half-game behind Memphis and Phoenix for the West's final playoff berth entering Wednesday.

Around the league: Heat guard Dwyane Wade missed his fourth straight game (and 23rd overall) with a sore hamstring. Guard Ray Allen sat with the flu. ... Raptors guard Kyle Lowry sat out with a sore left knee. He collided with LeBron James on Monday. ... Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving returned after missing eight games with a biceps injury.
