The International Indian Film Academy announced Friday that actor and director Anupam Kher will premiere his short film I Went Shopping for Robert De Niro and conduct an acting workshop for students at the University of South Florida on April 24.
Kher is a 30-year Bollywood veteran who has appeared in more than 460 films and plays and has had crossover roles in movies such as Bend It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice, Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and Silver Linings Playbook, which starred De Niro. The 29-minute film's writer and main actor is Shivangi Kshirsagar, who really did shop for De Niro.
"I thought, 'Why not showcase this to the kids of Tampa?'" said Andre Timmins, director of Wizcraft International Entertainment, the Mumbai-based company that created the IIFA awards. "We want to promote different films and give opportunities to students to be a part of the Indian cinema and IIFA experience."
In showcasing elements of Indian and American cinema, I Went Shopping for Robert De Niro is an apt premiere for IIFA's first appearance in the United States, Timmins said.
The 15th annual IIFA Weekend & Awards is scheduled for April 23-26 in Tampa, with the awards show the evening of April 26 at Raymond James Stadium.
