A 54-year-old man was taken to the hospital Saturday with life-threatening injuries after he had a seizure while riding his bicycle and swerved into a car, St. Petersburg police said.
About 1 p.m., Michael Cavanaugh was riding eastbound on the sidewalk of 38th Avenue N away from Tyrone Boulevard. The seizure forced Cavanaugh off the sidewalk and into the curbside lane of oncoming traffic, police said.
David Covington, 65, of St. Petersburg, tried to avoid him with his Buick SUV, but struck Cavanaugh. The front tire of the bicycle hit the front right corner of the SUV and threw Cavanaugh from the bicycle. Cavanaugh was not wearing a helmet, police said, and smacked his head on the SUV's windshield.
He was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in critical condition.
