CANADIENS GET OT WIN TO PASS LIGHTNING

Times wires

MONTREAL - Brian Gionta scored on a penalty shot at 2:04 of overtime to give the Canadiens a 1-0 victory over the Rangers on Saturday in the final regular-season game for both teams.

Carey Price made 39 saves for the shutout as Montreal ended the season with 100 points and moved past the Lightning for second place in the Atlantic Division.

The Lightning can get home-ice advantage for the teams' first-round playoff meeting with a win in its final game today against the Capitals.

Gionta was awarded the shot after he poked the puck away from Rangers defenseman Raphael Diaz and then was tripped by Diaz on a breakaway. Gionta deked to the backhand to beat Rangers goalie Cam Talbot.

Playoff chase: Defenseman Mark Streit scored in overtime, and the Flyers beat the host Penguins 4-3 to lock in a third-place finish in the Metropolitan Division and a first-round playoff matchup with the Rangers, who will have home-ice advantage. ... The Blue Jackets clinched the first wild-card spot in the East with a 3-2 win over the host Panthers in their season finale and will face the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs, with Pittsburgh having home ice.

Game highlights: The Bruins (54-18-9) clinched the league's best record with a 4-1 win over the visiting Sabres in a game in which Buffalo goalie Matt Hackett was taken off the ice on a stretcher after Boston defenseman Torey Krug fell on his right leg. Hackett had a leg injury that was "pretty bad," coach Ted Nolan said. The leg wasn't broken, Nolan said, but he gave no more information. Hackett would be examined by doctors in Buffalo, he said.
