HAWKS EARN PLAYOFF BERTH

Times wires

ATLANTA - Jeff Teague scored 25, Lou Williams had 18 of his 23 in the fourth quarter and the Hawks earned the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot with a 98-85 victory over the Heat on Saturday night.

Atlanta's third straight victory eliminated the Knicks from playoff contention. Williams scored the Hawks' last 12.

LeBron James finished with 27 points, and Dwyane Wade, in his first game since missing nine straight with a sore left hamstring, scored 24 for Miami.

The two-time defending champion Heat, which has lost three of four, gave up the ground it gained in the standings Friday, when it beat Indiana at home and took a half-game lead over the Pacers. Miami and Indiana are now tied atop the Eastern Conference with 54-26 records. The Heat's 85 points were its third fewest this season.

James and Chris Bosh returned to the floor with 6:42 remaining and Miami trailing 81-72. But DeMarre Carroll stole the ball from Bosh, and Mike Scott's fastbreak dunk matched Atlanta's biggest lead at 11 with 6:09 remaining.

Coach Erik Spoelstra said the Heat's medical staff cleared Wade to play following a pregame workout. He finished the first half with 16 points, going 7-of-7 from the field in just 11 minutes.

Miami visits Washington on Monday and ends the regular season at home Wednesday against Philadelphia. The Pacers host Oklahoma City today and visit Orlando on Wednesday to close the regular season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Former Gator Bradley Beal scored 26, and the host Wizards moved a step closer to claiming the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference with a 104-91 win over the Bucks, whose loss guaranteed they will finish with at least a tie for the league's worst record. John Wall added 15 points and eight assists for the Wizards, who also clinched the franchise's first winning record since 2008 - which was also the last time they made the playoffs. ... Blake Griffin scored 27, DeAndre Jordan added 21 and the Clippers beat the Kings 117-101 to earn their franchise record-tying 56th victory of the regular season. Chris Paul added 17 points and 10 assists, J.J. Redick had 13 points and Matt Barnes scored 12 in helping the playoff-bound Clippers improve to 33-7 at Staples Center, breaking the franchise record for home victories in a season. ... Rookie Kelly Olynyk matched a career high with 25 points and the short-handed Celtics defeated the host Cavaliers 111-99.

LATE FRIDAY: Truth be told, no one believed Corey Brewer could do it. Not his teammate Ricky Rubio. Not his coach Rick Adelman. And certainly not his opponent, the Houston Rockets.

Deep down inside, Brewer didn't even believe it himself.

"I'm not even going to lie," Brewer said with a starry look in his eyes. "Fifty?!?"

Actually, he did it one better.

The former Gator scored a career-high 51 and Gorgui Dieng hit a short jumper with 4.6 seconds to play to give the short-handed Timberwolves a 112-110 victory over the visiting Rockets.

Brewer made 19 of 30 shots in 45 minutes, easily surpassing his previous career high of 29 points. He became the fifth player this season to score 50, and the Wolves had 39 points in transition against Houston's defense.

"You know how many guys scored 50 in the NBA?" said Brewer, who also had six steals. "That's what makes it such a special night because I never in my career expected to score 50. ... There's a lot of good company up there."
