FOOTBALL GRAB BAG

What would the first week of some big district games be without a special edition Grab Bag, playoff prognostication style?

* * *

Class 8A-6

Three key stats

1. Plant has the leading passer (Rex Culpepper), rusher (Patrick Brooks), receiver (Derrick Baity) and best defense in the district.

2. Not only does Riverview have the district's stingiest defense (allowing just eight points a game), next to Plant - which has outscored opponents 161-61 - Riverview is second in point differential, having outscored opponents 54-34 despite being 1-3.

3. Four of Newsome's five games have been decided by eight points or fewer.

Class 8A-7

Three key stats

1. St. Petersburg's Austyn Causey has only thrown three incomplete passes in his past two games. He was 16-for-19 for 277 yards and four touchdowns in wins vs. Lakewood and Boca Ciega.

2. Green Devil running back Jacquel Waller ran for 94 yards last week and has already eclipsed his 2013 season total.

3. Sarasota Riverview is probably the biggest threat to St. Petersburg making the playoffs, but the Rams' two wins are against teams with a combined 1-9 record.

Class 7A-9

Three key stats

1. East Lake has won 15 consecutive games against district opponents, including 45-0, 42-12 and 47-3 wins over contenders Pinellas Park and Countryside last season.

2. The last team to beat East Lake in a district game was Countryside, 15-14 in 2010.

3. Pinellas Park hasn't allowed a point in 11 straight quarters.

Class 7A-8

Three key stats

1. Two district games have been played, and a total of 31 points have been scored. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more 9-6 and 9-7 games.

2. Strawberry Crest has been outscored by a 2-to-1 margin, but leads the district at 1-0.

3. East Bay has more passing yards than Plant City, 95-60.

Class 7A-7

Three key stats

1. Freedom has 15 takeaways, including four interceptions by Aaron Cox.

2. Tampa Bay Tech has thrown one touchdown pass this season in 99 passing attempts.

3. The district has five running backs with more than 200 yards, and three of them are on Gaither's roster: Curtis Wilder (244), Alex Rodriguez (242) and Malik Huff (230).

Class 6A-8

Three key stats

1. Teams are 30-for-89 for 285 yards and just one touchdown passing against Armwood.

2. King has won three straight games after losing its first two by three points each.

3. If not for some losses that were changed to wins due to forfeits, Leto would have broken the state record for consecutive losses last week with its 44th straight defeat. Forest Hill set the record of 43 from 1999-2003.

Class 6A-7

Three key stats

1. Largo has played three district champions from last year already, and are 1-2 in those games, the only win coming last week against Lakewood.

2. Venice has allowed just one touchdown in each of its past four games.

3. Largo has won 37 straight district games, the longest active streak in Tampa Bay.

Class 6A-6

Three key stats

1. Discounting its easy win over Anclote, Land O'Lakes has scored 14 points in the first half in its other four games, but 84 in the second half. The slow starts are killing the Gators.

2. Sunlake has allowed 19 points, lowest total in Tampa Bay this season.

3. Every team in 6A-6 has scored more points than it has allowed, the only such district in Tampa Bay.

* * *

Class 5A-9

Three key stats

1. Spoto's Todd Sims is second in the district in rushing (439), first in receiving (176) and second in points.

2. Jesuit is 10-2 against Spoto and Middleton lifetime.

3. The only time Middleton has ever beaten Jesuit was in 1970, by a 51-28 score.

* * *

Class 5A-8

Three key stats

1. Lakewood quarterback Ryan Davis is second in the district in passing (794 yards) and first in rushing (601), and is averaging 11.8 yards a carry.

2. Dunedin has allowed just one passer this season - East Lake's Jake Hudson - to throw for more than 85 yards in a game.

3. Tarpon Springs has lost 13 straight games against a team with the word "lake" in it (Lakewood, East Lake, Lakewood Ranch) dating to 2005.

* * *

Class 5A-7

Three key stats

1. We thought this might be a fun little district, and with four teams giving up 30 points or more a game, it has produced its share of points.

2. After two years off, Gulf's Keshaun Peters has thrown for more yards every week than he did the previous week, culminating in what is believed to be a county-record 476 yards against Land O'Lakes last week.

3. Hudson (1,343) and River Ridge (1,208) are the third- and fourth-leading rushing teams in all of Tampa Bay, behind Lakewood and Pinellas Park.

* * *

Class 5A-6

Three key stats

1. South Sumter (5-0) has outscored teams 233-16 this season and it's pretty doubtful anyone can cut it off on the way to another district title.

2. Nature Coast Tech running back DeShawn Smith joined the highly populated 200-yard club last week with a career-high 215 against Pasco.

3. Zephyrhills hasn't made the playoffs since 2006.

* * *

Class 3A-5

1. Clearwater Central Catholic is averaging 40 points a game against some of the best competition in the state.

2. Calvary Christian's Stephon Williams is averaging 15.5 yards a carry and 163 yards a game.

3. Admiral Farragut was within one score at halftime in all three of its losses, which were to teams with a combined 13-2 record.

* * *

Class 3A-4

Three key stats

1. Frostproof, expected to drop off after a host of key players left, has allowed only seven points a game.

2. The combined record of teams Fort Meade (4-1) has beaten this season is 4-16.

3. Gordon Stetson leads Berkeley Prep in rushing (488 yards, six TDs) and receiving (196 yards, TD).

* * *

Class 2A-5

Three key stats

1. Indian Rocks Christian hasn't allowed a point in 10 straight quarters.

2. Bradenton Christian's Zack Cooper leads the district with 655 yards rushing, almost 200 yards ahead of Cambridge Christian freshman Andrew Cunningham (467).

3. Cambridge quarterback Garrett Young has more passing yards (1,292) than the rest of the district's other teams combined, if you don't include Canterbury (where Josh Belton has 921).
