IN THEATERS: OUR TOP FIVE

Published Oct. 2, 2014|Updated Oct. 2, 2014

Current movies recommended by the Tampa Bay Times:

* * *

1. Gone Girl -The mystery - and maybe the movie - of the year. For once, a movie adaptation matches its literary source, under David Fincher's taut direction.

2. Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival - Maestro of trash John Waters headlines the opening weekend of Tampa Bay's longest running cinema showcase.

3. The Skeleton Twins -Deft dramatics by SNL refugees Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader make this downbeat dual character study a pleasure to endure.

4. The Equalizer -Ultra-violent vigilante yarn, with Denzel Washington badder and bloodier than ever before. The '80s TV series was never like this.

5. The Good Lie -A survival story inspired by truth, with Reese Witherspoon's casting inspired by box office business sense.
