Amazon's distribution warehouse is finally up and running in southeastern Hillsborough County.
The online retailer said Tuesday it shipped its first item, a Disney Frozen Ice Skating Anna doll, to a customer in New York.
Shipments began Sept. 24 from the 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center at 3350 Laurel Ridge Ave., near Interstate 75 and State Road 674 in Ruskin.
The warehouse is one of two that Amazon has opened in Florida. The other is in Lakeland. The Ruskin fulfillment center ships small items, such as toys, books and CDs. The Lakeland center ships large items, such as TVs and kayaks.
The Ruskin facility was expected to hire an estimated 1,000 people to pick, pack and ship orders. Construction on the building began in November.
As of Tuesday, Amazon's job sites listed openings for seasonal and permanent positions. Workatamazonfulfillment.com had a listing for seasonal fulfillment associates in Ruskin earning $10.50 an hour. Amazon.jobs had more than a dozen other openings in Ruskin, ranging from recruitment administrator to project manager. No pay for those jobs was listed.
