LATE KICKER'S FATHER: 'HE DRANK TOO MUCH'

Times wires

When former Titans kicker Rob Bironas lost control of his SUV in a single-car accident that killed him, his blood-alcohol content was .218, more than 2.5 times the limit at which Tennessee presumes driver impairment, a toxicology report obtained by the Tennessean revealed.

Bironas' father said Friday that he didn't know why his son got behind the wheel on Sept. 20. "He drank too much and got in the car, and it cost him his life," Larry Bironas, 68, told the newspaper. "Why it happened? Why had he been drinking so much that night? Why did he get behind the wheel? ... We'll probably never know."

A woman called 911 the night of the crash and said Bironas, 36, had tried to run her off the road. A group of Belmont University students also said Bironas had tried to run them off the road and threatened to kill them. While police said there was no alcohol at the scene, Larry Bironas expected alcohol to show up on his son's toxicology report. "I told you I could live with the news, even if it was bad," he said, referring to an earlier interview with the Tennessean. "Now if Rob had taken out a family, I would have had a tough time."

The Titans have said they plan to honor Bironas before today's game against Cleveland.

Cowboys: Cornerback Morris Claiborne was put on injured reserve, four days after season-ending knee surgery.

Jaguars: Receiver Ace Sanders was activated to the 53-man roster and tight end Mickey Shuler was waived.
