F1 DRIVER HAS HEAD SURGERY

TOKYO - Formula One driver Jules Bianchi is in "serious but stable condition" following emergency surgery for a severe head injury after a crash during the Japanese Grand Prix, FIA said Monday. Bianchi, 25, is at Mie General Medical Center following Sunday's crash into a trackside recovery crane. Hospital officials declined to comment on his condition. "Bianchi is in a serious but stable condition," FIA's Matteo Bonciani told the Associated Press. Bianchi was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital.

Young out 8 weeks after thumb surgery

Lakers G Nick Young will be out for about eight weeks after surgery on his torn thumb ligament. The Lakers said Young had successful surgery Monday. He tore the radial collateral ligament in his right thumb last week in training camp while guarding Kobe Bryant.

Donovan's farewell includes NASL player

Landon Donovan, 32, will be surrounded by a youthful roster for the United States' exhibition against Ecuador in East Hartford, Conn., on Friday, when he is set to make his 157th and final international appearance. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced his 21-player roster Monday. Included is Minnesota United F Miguel Ibarra, 24, the first national team player from the NASL where the Rowdies play.
