Newsome swimmer picks Duke

Newsome's Maddie Hess, the Tampa Bay Times' Hillsborough County swimmer of the year the past two seasons, committed to Duke on Sunday.

Hess, ranked third in the state and 12th nationally in the 2015 class according to collegeswimming.com, is a two-time defending state champion in the 100 free and 100 back. She also has helped the Wolves win state titles in the 200 medley relay in 2012 and the 200 free relay last season.

Hess started swimming at the age of 5 and has stayed devoted the sport. She is the second girls swimmer from the Tampa Bay area to commit to the Blue Devils, joining East Lake's Alexandra Aitchison, the Times' Pinellas County swimmer of the year last season.

Harris atop SAC; Mitchell makes it 14

Sunlake's Kelly Harris shot 75 Monday to defend her Sunshine Athletic Conference girls golf championship at The Links and Mitchell took its 14th consecutive team title. Read more at tampabay.com/hometeam.
