A 16-year-old boy who was shot in the head Saturday night in Ybor City remained hospitalized Monday as detectives continued to investigate.
Police identified the teen as Shannon Montgomery, who lives in the Grant Park area of Tampa. He was not cooperating with investigators, police said.
The shooting happened about 11 p.m. Saturday as officers were responding to a call regarding a fight at the Centro Ybor entertainment complex. At the same time, a call came in reporting the shooting down the street at N 15th Street and E Eighth Avenue.
Montgomery was found on the sidewalk with a pool of blood under his head. A bullet entered the right temple, severed the optic nerves in his eyes and exited the left temple, but he was conscious and talking to officers, police said. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where his condition was described Monday as stable.
A large group of people were seen running from the area of the shooting, police said. Officers detained several people, including a 15-year-old boy described as a "person of interest," but all were later released.
The shooting was believed to have happened as a result of what police said is an ongoing dispute between neighborhood groups. The investigation remained ongoing Monday. No arrests had been made.
