An Ybor City brewery is offering some old fashioned drinks at old fashioned prices Wednesday.
Rock Brothers Brewing Company and Old Forester bourbon are celebrating the Dec. 5, 1933 repeal of prohibition by offering Old Fashioneds, one of the most classic and revered cocktails, at the “1933 pricing” of just 50 cents between 7 and 10 p.m.
To secure the repeal-era pricing, just say “Bottled in Bond,” a nod to Old Forester’s 100-proof 1897 Bottled in Bond bourbon, part of its Whiskey Row series.
The Old Fashioned has been a staple in the cocktail world since its alleged inception at a Kentucky club in 1881. The cocktail combines bourbon (sometimes rye) and a dash of Angostura bitters muddled with a sugar cube and water, then garnished with an orange peel and the occasional cherry, served on the rocks.
The cocktail has enjoyed new prominence in recent years thanks, in part at least, to being the drink of choice for Mad Men’s leading mad man Don Draper.
If you find yourself on the other side of the Bay, St. Petersburg's Beach Drive drinkery The Canopy at Birchwood is hosting a Repeal Day party as well, complete with their own take on an Old Forester-based Old Fashioned.
Repeal Day is celebrated annually on Dec. 5, the day in 1933 when the 21st Amendment was ratified and the Volstead Act, which placed a ban on alcohol sales throughout the country, was lifted after 13 years.
