Preps reporter

I've been a staff writer since 1996. My career started before that as a correspondent with the St. Petersburg Times. I covered former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and current USF assistant Shaun King's first start as a quarterback at Gibbs High. Writing about locals is a passion. I'm a fourth-generation Floridian who graduated from Dixie Hollins High. My great grandfather owned a farm in Pinellas Park. My father was among the first graduating classes at Boca Ciega. Sometimes I venture into other sports. Once, I tried out for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. I was even assigned to one of their minor league affiliates. Well, sort of. Dan Jennings, the team's director of scouting at the time, said he was sending me to Walla, Walla, Wash. He was kidding. I think. Well, either way, I'm still here doing what I love to do.

  1. The Pinellas Park Patriots take to the field moments after the end of the fourth quarter against Mitchell on Friday night. The Patriots won 29-19.
PSA to opposing offenses facing Lakewood this season: Good night and good luck.
  2. Cambridge Christian's Julian Suriel runs the ball in for a touchdown in the third quarter against Admiral Farragut.
In a rematch of last year’s Class 2A region final, this time it’s the Lancers’ defense stealing the spotlight.
  3. The Middleton Tigers prepare to take the field against the Sickles Gryphons on Monday. For many teams, it's a short week thanks to weather delays.
The local Class 2A showdown between Admiral Farragut and Cambridge Christian has our staffers split.
  4. Cambridge Christian quarterback Titan Williamson has thrown for 534 yards and four touchdowns in the two games he started.
Titan Williamson is in firm control of a high-powered offense, even if his leading role was a bit unexpected.
  5. Clearwater's Keedrik Murray (5) leads the area in receiving yards with almost 400.
The standouts on offense and defense from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando counties.
  6. Dunedin quarterback Dylan Oester, left, listens as coach Mitch Disney gives instruction during a recent practice.
Mired in a 43-game losing streak, the Falcons opted to leave district play to have more control over their schedule. No one can argue with the results.
  7. From left, Middleton cheerleading coach Sarah Sebeck and the booster club’s Christina Wilson-Smith and Kim Colston prepare to release balloons in memory of Hezekiah B. Walters.
Before their home opener, the Tigers honor the freshman, who died during an offseason workout in June.
  8. It will be a battle of city schools when Sunlake, above, and Land O' Lakes meet Tuesday.
This weeks offers more stellar volleyball, a top Class 2A football matchup and one of the season’s biggest cross country races.
  9. Armwood players warm up on the field before the season opener against Plant.
Armwood stays at the top, but there is some shuffling throughout thanks to competitive schedules.
  10. Clearwater's Rent Montie (12) and Jesuit's Kiael Kelly (6) watch the coin flip before the game on Friday.
And a big game from Lawrance Toafili proves you can’t count out Pinellas Park as district play approaches.
