Up next for Hollywood reboot: Flash Gordon

Published October 31 2018

"Gordon's alive?!?" The '80s can't completely claim the campy majesty that is Flash Gordon – it's based on the comic strip and the Buster Crabbe movies of the 1930s – but pardon us for gasping when we learned that it's the next movie that Hollywood plans to reboot.

Deadline.com reports that Julius Avery (whose horror flick Overlord premieres Nov. 9) has been tapped to write and direct a reboot of Flash Gordon. The 1980 version of Flash Gordon has always been a B-movie classic, but it got some overdue love in Seth MacFarlane's movie Ted. The movie starred Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, Topol, Max von Sydow and Timothy Dalton. It's probably best remembered for the Queen soundtrack.

According to Deadline, Avery worshiped the movie while growing up in Australia, and his enthusiastic pitch to the studio is what got him the job.

Interesting point brought up by Movieweb.com though: Fox is the studio currently handling the project, but with the Fox-Disney merger nearing its completion, it might be Disney's call on whether to proceed or not on Flash Gordon. Expect the execs at Disney to be watching how Avery's Overload performs at the box office before any final decision is made.
