 WHO’S RUNNING
  • Republican Doug Chorvat of Brooksville is an 18-year veteran of the clerk’s office. He’s currently the office’s chief deputy.
  • Michael Lamberti (no party affiliation) of Spring Hill has been an attorney for almost 10 years with the Public Defender’s Office in the 5th Judicial Circuit. He moved to Hernando County around 1998.
  • The county clerk has the broad-ranging job of overseeing county finances, managing legal documents and auditing county activities.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
  • Since 1971, each clerk in Hernando has either run unopposed as a handpicked successor or been appointed to the role. This is the first time since then that voters will have a choice.
  • Chorvat wants to implement an online system for filing and searching financial records, like the one for Hernando County court cases. His background with the office will help, he said. He also wants to see where cross-agency work can be pared down and made universal.
  • Lamberti wants to integrate artificial intelligence with document filing. Finding ways to automate the system, he argues, would conserve resources under constricting budgets. He also wants to open customer-service kiosks. He believes fresh eyes are needed in the office.
