In the District 4 Hernando County race, incumbent Jeff Holcomb won his second term on the commission, significantly besting political newcomer and Democrat Nancy Makar.
Holcomb, 48, is an information technology consultant and a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve who was called up for service during his first term on the commission. He also was criticized for significant donations from businesses working for the county and had to give back a couple of donations above the amount allowed by campaign rules.
His campaign focused on keeping the general fund tax rate in check and pushing to keep a poorly performing road contractor from getting more county work.
Makar, 68, founder of the Pathways Counseling Center, said the commission needed to listen better to its constituents and its community. She also noted the lack of diversity on the all-male, all-Republican commission, saying that other points of view needed to be represented.
Holcomb, who was celebrating at the Republican victory party after the vote count on Tuesday, said he was excited about the win and said Maker had been a "tough competitor" with her business background.
