Tax-free weekend is here, and so is a sneaker convention

Before the first bell rings, Florida residents have a chance to do their back-to-school shopping during the annual tax-free weekend Friday to Sunday.
And corporate retailers in the Tampa Bay area are gearing up for the rush.
New products will make up 25 percent of Walmart's trendy school supply assortment this year under the theme "Go Back Big," including glow-in-the-dark glue, unicorn backpacks and emoji pencil cases. In addition, Walmart has launched online options for college students and teachers, and expanded pickup and delivery options.
Target's Back to School sales this year include exclusive Target brands such as Cat & Jack and Up & Up. Target shoppers can find their supply lists for Tampa Bay area schools at the online School List Assist. For college students, the College Order Pickup service offers a 15 percent discount for items purchased online and sent to a Target location near a student's school.
No matter where you shop, the following items are eligible to receive the sales tax break:
School supplies, $15 and under: binders, calculators, colored pencils, compasses, composition books, construction paper, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, highlighters, legal pads, lunch boxes, markers, notebook filler paper, notebooks, paste, pencils, pens, poster board and paper, protractors, rulers, scissors and tape.
Clothing, footwear and accessories, $60 and under: aerobic and fitness, sleepwear, underclothes, uniforms; boots, shoes (including athletic), shoe inserts and insoles, slippers, socks; backpacks and book bags, belts, handbags, wallets;  barrettes, bicycle helmets (youth), bobby pins, bows, hats, ponytail holders; medical braces and supports; raincoats and swimwear.

While comic book collectors are convening at Tampa Bay Comic Con this weekend, sneaker aficionados are gathering at the Crown Plaza Westshore on Sunday for the Sneaker Travelers convention. While some of the vendors are sneaker boutiques, most are individual collectors that have a passion for rare kicks. Attendees can buy, sell or trade, or just kick it with fellow fans. Many vendors carry apparel as well. The event includes raffles, giveaways of sneakers and apparel, food and a live DJ. Noon-6 p.m. 5303 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. $20, women get in free before 1 p.m.; kids 8 and younger free all day.
