College athletes would be free to transfer without penalty if their coach leaves under an NCAA proposal obtained by CBS Sports.
The proposal – you can see the draft here – would have major ramifications across sports, especially in football and basketball. If enacted, athletes would be free to leave their school if their coach departs. Those athletes would be immediately eligible without sitting out a year, as they must do under current rules. They could not, however, follow their coach to the new school.
The proposal would also allow athletes to transfer if their school receives postseason sanctions.
"Basically, we're saying kids can go anywhere they want," Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard told CBS' Dennis Dodd. "For the first time ever in college athletics, the student-athlete is empowered."
It's worth noting that this is only a proposal, but it's a promising idea that could gain traction and, eventually, be enacted.
