Publix begins construction on USF campus

Construction got a delayed start, but the 28,000-square-foot store is now in the works.

Rejoice, Publix lovers of the University of South Florida, for construction has begun on the hotly anticipated Publix on USF's campus.

The 28,000-square-foot grocery store is springing up next to university's gleaming new student housing village, which partially opened last year, and where construction is slated to wrap this fall. It's not clear yet when the Publix at Fletcher Avenue and USF Palm Drive will open. Construction got a delayed start.

The store will feature indoor and outdoor seating and bike racks, and it will be walkable from the nearby dorms.

"We're excited to bring a Publix to the campus at USF where students can live, work, play and eat," said Maria Brous, director of media and community relations, in a news release. "Conveniently located to USF residence halls, the short walk or bike ride will offer plenty of fresh grab-and-go options, including our world-famous Publix subs, deli teas, decadent desserts and sushi."
