Reading scores are down in Hillsborough’s lowest-performing schools

It’s just one indicator, one of many.

But the third-grade Florida Standards Assessment scores in English language arts provide an early measure of the new Achievement Schools initiative in Hillsborough County.

Have children at the targeted schools become stronger readers? We looked at this year’s scores, and specifically the percentage that were reading at Level 1, the lowest in the state system.

In two-thirds of the cases, the percentages of Level 1 readers went up, not down, indicating more children were lacking in basic reading skills. A few schools improved. One stayed the same. Here’s the breakdown:

Bing Elementary: 32 percent Level 1 this year, 30 last year.

Broward Elementary: 54 this year, 44 last year.

Bryan Elementary: 28 this year, 34 last year.

Burney Elementary: 45 this year, 43 last year.

Clair Mel Elementary: 32 this year, 20 last year.

Cleveland Elementary: 42 this year, 30 last year.

Dover Elementary: 36 this year, 37 last year.

Dunbar Elementary: 29 this year, 24 last year.

Edison Elementary: 23 this year, 41 last year.

Folsom Elementary: 43 this year, 37 last year.

Forest Hills Elementary: 47 this year, 50 last year.

Foster Elementary: 64 this year, 44 last year.

Frost Elementary: 27 this year, 14 last year.

Gibsonton Elementary: 46 this year, 41 last year.

Graham Elementary: 44 this year, 36 last year.

Ippolito Elementary: 38 this year, 27 last year.

James Elementary: 69 this year, 51 last year.

Jackson Elementary: 35 this year, 37 last year.
