Locals trail after first round of Class 2A state golf tournament

Local golfers find the competition stiff after the first round of the tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills

Sunlake's Jordan Sarhaddi is the top local individual after the first round of the Class 2A state tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills. The junior shot a 3 over 75 at the Mission Inn and Resort and is tied for eighth. Mitchell's Nick Gabrelcik isn't far behind after a 5 over 77, which is tied for 13th. Ponte Vedra's Stewart Slayden is the leader with a 3 under 69.

Jesuit is the top local boys team. The Tigers shot a 327 and are tied for sixth. Junior Max White shot a 79, Jimmy Paradise shot an 80 and Connor Murphy shot an 81.  Sunlake is 10th with a 349. Sarhaddi led the way while Max Barile shot an 81 and Damien Rhule shot an 83. Pasco is 13th with a 361. Cole Darbyshire was the low scorer with an 84. Ponte Vedra leads the team tournament with a 301.

In the girls tournament, Nature Coast is ninth with a 373, which makes it the top local team. Alexis Dross shot an 82 to lead the Sharks. King is 10th with a 375. Ashley Birdsong shot an 86 to lead the Lions. Zephyrhills is 16th with a 438. Plantation American Heritage is the top team with a 304.

Osceola senior Madison Heideman is the top local individual with a 10 over 82. She is tied for 30th. Claire Vermette of Northeast is tied for 39th after an opening round 14 over 86. Jillian Bourdage of Plantation American Heritage leads with a 2 under 70.
