Mitchell sophomore Nick Gabrelcik finished fifth at the Class 2A state golf tournament on Wednesday at the Mission Inn and Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills with a two-day score of 77-73—150. He finished just four shots behind champion Stewart Slayton of Ponte Vedra. River Ridge's Aiden Holmes finished a respectable tied for 16th with a 78-79—157.
Jesuit was the highest finishing local team with a 650, good enough for seventh place. Ponte Vedra won the tournament with a 613. Junior Max White led the Tigers with a 79-81—160. Sunlake was 12th with a 714. Jordan Sarhaddi was the top finisher with a 75-82—157. Pasco finished 15th in the 16 team field.
In the girls tournament, Nature Coast was the top local team with a ninth place finish (761). Skylar Musicanese shot a 86-90—176 and Alexis Dross shot an 82-96—178. King was tied for 10th with a 772. Sarah Yo and Ashley Birdsong each shot 184 to lead the Lions. Zephyrhills finished 16th. Plantation American Heritage won the tournament with a 602.
Individually, Northeast's Claire Vermette finished tied for 22nd with an 86-75—161. Jillian Bourdage of American Heritage won the tournament with a 70-74—144. Former Seminole golfer Alyssa Lamoureux, who is now a senior at Leesburg, was second with a 145. Madison Heideman of Osceola was tied for 29th with an 82-83—165. Olivia Kassian of Fivay was tied for 42nd with a 92-84—176.
