Plant tied for seventh at Class 3A golf tournament; East Lake’s Madison Hewlett tied for first

The defending champions are nine shots off the pace after first round. Hewlett shot a 2 under 70

After the first day of the Class 3A state golf championship at the Mission Inn and Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, defending champion Plant has some work to do. The Panthers are tied for seventh with a 313, nine shots behind Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. Jackson Suber shot an opening round 2 over 74 to lead Plant. Carson Moran shot a 75. Suber is tied for ninth individually.

Freedom senior Cy Storlien is fourth individually with an opening round 1 under 71. He is just two shots behind Jonathan Yaun of Lake Minneola.

Palm Harbor University is tied for 12th. Billy Bennett was the top player with a 77.

In the girls tournament, East Lake freshman Madison Hewlett is tied for first after a first round 2 under 70. Steinbrenner is the top local team with a tied for sixth 329. Senior Anna Jansen shot a 77. Sophomore Alexis Castillo shot a 79. East Lake is 10th.
