Devils forward Miles Wood was suspended two games without pay for his boarding penalty Saturday night against Lightning forward Vladislav Namestnikov during the second period of the Devils 4-3 victory.
The hit knocked Namestnikov into the boards and ended up forcing Andrej Sustr to get 23 stitches on his face.
"I'm pretty sure he jumped," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "So, I know that's a no-no in this league."
Wood left his skates and hit Namestnikov high, forcing the Lightning center face-first into the boards.
Sustr immediately jumped to his teammates defense, though lost the fight when Wood punched through the visor on Sustr's mask.
Wood received a two-minute boarding penalty and two minutes for roughing.
Sustr got two minutes for roughing, though he served it in the trainers' room while getting stitched up.
Namestnikov stayed down in the ice for a minute or so while Sustr and Wood duked it out. Namestnikov returned for his next shift but left the game to be checked for a concussion.
Both Sustr and Namestnikov returned for the third period.
Wood will forfeit $9,946.24, which will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
