(The mask worn by) Andrei Vasilevskiy continues to turn heads

Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy isn't making any highlight-reel saves while sidelined with a broken foot, but his mask continues to attract notice.

The design Sylvie Marsolais created for Vasilevskiy ranks seventh on The Hockey News' list of primary masks worn by NHL starting goaltenders.

"Vasilevskiy's mask was voted best in the league by NHL fans last season, and it features some high-tech art this year, changing color when it gets wet," THN's Matt Larkin writes. "The lion on the forehead looks ferocious, too."

The mask David Arrigo designed for former Lightning goalie Mike Smith, now with the Flames, lands one spot behind Vasilevskiy's.

Writes Larkin, "The Incredibles color scheme jives nicely with the Flames' colors, and Smith continues his 'Smunchkins' theme, featuring his kids as superheroes. It's fun and looks sharp up close or from a distance."

The mask worn by Stars goalie and ex-Bolt Ben Bishop doesn't fare nearly as well. The Dave Gunnarsson design ranks 29th.

"There's a thematic disconnect here," Larkin writes. "The voltage works if Bishop still plays for the Lightning. Feels like a missed opportunity. There's so much history to draw from if you're playing for a Texas-based team."

No mask ranks higher than the one Gunnarsson created for Robin Lehner. Demons represent the Islanders goalie's battle with bipolar disorder and addiction.

"The demonic imagery is jarring and scary," Larkin writes. "The personal tale behind it brings emotional heft."

One-off masks were not considered. Nor were those of backup goaltenders.
