Rays drop Curt Casali, Cesar Puello and Shawn Tolleson from 40-man roster

Casali spent most of 2016 in the majors, but most of 2017 in the minors.

The Rays continued to clear space on their 40-man roster, outrighting C Curt Casali, OF Cesar Puello and RHP Shawn Tolleson.

All will become minor-league free agents.

Casali was the Rays primary catcher in 2016, but with the additions of Wilson Ramos, Derek Norris and Jesus Sucre spent just about the full minor-league season with Triple-A until joining the Rays in September.

Puello was claimed on waivers from the Angels in mid-August, but didn't get much playing time, hitting .200 (6-for-30) in 16 games. He had made his big-league debut earlier in the season with the Angels.

Tolleson missed the whole season with injury, undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery in May that will sideline him for much of 2018 as well.
