The Rays' efforts to cut payroll took another hit Saturday as they lost an arbitration hearing with SS Adeiny Hechavarria, who will make the $5.95 million he requested rather than the $5.35 million offered.
Hechavarria, acquired in late June from the Marlins, hit .261 with eight homers, 30 RBIs and a .695 OPS in 97 games overall, playing tremendous defense for the Rays.
"Arbitration hearings let a third party resolve disagreements so that we can all keep our focus on the field once camp opens, and we're looking forward to doing just that," senior VP Chaim Bloom said.
The Rays, represented in Arizona by VP James Click, have another hearing Feb. 12 with RHP Jake Odorizzi, with either a $6.05 million or $6.35 million outcome.
