The Rays have called up top prospect INF Willy Adames – though likely for a short stay.

INF Joey Wendle was placed on the paternity list Tuesday, which allows him to miss up to three days.

Manager Kevin Cash said Adames is headed back to Triple-A Durham when Wendle returns.

"It presents an opportunity for Willy to get up here," Cash said. "He's going to play two or three of the next days. I'm not sure how long Joey is going to be gone, but anticipate definitely today and tomorrow, and then we'll kind of see where we go from there.

"And then Willy's going to go back. But saying that, we're excited to have him up here. The clubhouse is excited, the staff's excited, the front office. Everybody is excited. We've talked about this for quite some time. Lot of questions are always asked about Willy because he is such a talented player. And now we're going to get to see him for a couple days come up here and do his thing."

Adames is in the lineup tonight playing shortstop and hitting fifth.

And in an interesting twist, Adames on Wednesday will face the player he was traded for in the three-team, five-player deal that sent David Price to the Tigers in July 2014.

The Rays are already without SS Adeiny Hechavarria, who is on the DL with a right hamstring strain.
