Rays OF Carlos Gomez found a way to gain a new fan in enemy territory on Tuesday.
Lacking sunglasses while playing sunbathed right field in the first inning in Oakland, he went over to the stands and borrowed a pair of shades from a fan in an A's sweatshirt.
And after making a couple of plays in the inning, he returned them with a bonus – the ball he caught for the last out.
"In the first inning he came out, looked and saw the sun was in his eyes and he came over (to the stands) to look for some glasses," the fan, Matt Welch, told Fox Sports Sun's Michelle Margaux.
"I had mine and hollered at him and asked him if he wanted some glasses. He came over and took 'em. Made two plays with 'em and after he made the third out … he came and gave me the glasses and gave me the ball That was really cool."
Carlos Gomez just gave a ball to a fan... for allowing him to use his sunglasses in the bottom of the 1st here in Oakland. I am of the opinion that Carlos Gomez is under appreciated in the game. Might rub some the wrong way. I know this- he loves the fame & HAS FUN!— Dallas Braden (@DALLASBRADEN209) May 30, 2018
Was he concerned, Margaux asked, that Gomez would just keep the glasses?
"Not really," Welch said. "I know Carlos is a good guy and I knew he was going to give them back."
