UPDATE, 12:31: Roe said the knee has been an issue for a while, that an MRI In May showed the tear and he got a cortisone shot that helped but it had become worse of late and he decided, after talking with the team and his family, to have arthroscopic surgery done now (Friday actually). The recovery is usually 4-6 weeks so it may be September before he returns. … Schultz said he benefited from his brief earlier callup, pitching much better at Durham after going back. Also, his parents live near Albany, N.Y., and are driving down to see him today. … Cash said Diego Castillo is most likely to inherit Roe's duties of facing the toughest RH hitters.

DEVELOPING: The Rays lost another key piece of their pitching staff Sunday as RHP Chaz Roe was placed on the 10-day DL with a left meniscus tear.

RHP Jaime Schultz, who made his big-league debut earlier this season, was called up from Triple-A Durham. He has worked to a 3.38 ERA in 11 games since going back to the Bulls.

Roe has played a key role in the Rays bullpen, working in 41 games in mostly high leverage situations and, until allowing a walkoff grand slam on Friday, had been on an impressive role with 17 of his previous 19 had been scoreless. Overall he had a 3.60 ERA.
