Greg Auman’s takeaways from Wednesday’s Rays-Orioles game

It's early, but there's a promising calm to rookie LHP Jalen Beeks, who threw five innings of relief and gave up only two hits. Beeks, acquired from Boston for Nathan Eovaldi, has had two straight solid outings after struggling in his Rays debut.

You saw it all with the Orioles' Tim Beckham, from flashes of power with a homer for the second night to baffling D at short. He had an error on a would-be caught stealing. His foot missed the bag on a double-play ball. He let a runner slide around his tag on a play at second.

The Rays had what looked to be a textbook one-run win with strong long relief and timely hitting. Then Sergio Romo faced three batters in the ninth, gave up three hits, allowed two runs and lost the lead. Eventually, trading away half the reliable available arms will catch up that way.
