Several notable former Rays were among more than 40 players not tendered contracts by their former teams by Friday's deadline and thrust onto a free-agent market that has not been kind to mid-level veterans:

Among them:

INF Tim Beckham. After a record-setting August debut in Baltimore following the July 31, 2017, trade, Beckham returned to Earth in September. He then had a rough 2018, which was also interrupted by injury, posting a career low .661 OPS in 96 games, hitting .230 while making 19 errors between third base and shortstop. He made $3.4 million in 2018 and was projected to make $4.3 million via arbitration. Beckham, 29 in January, was traded for RHP Tobias Myers, who was 10-6, 3.71 at Class A Bowling Green in 2018.

RHP Brad Boxberger. Lost his job as the D'backs closer during the season,. converting 32 saves out of 40 chances, starting well but struggling as the year went on. He posted a 4.39 ERA overall, though 6.00 from early June on, and walked 32 in 53 1/3 innings. Made $1.85 million in 2018, was projected to get $4.9 million. Boxberger was traded at the end of last season for RHP Curtis Taylor, who split last season between Class A Charlotte and Double-A Montgomery, going 6-4, 2.54 with eight saves.

RHP Matt Bush. Though Bush never made it to the majors with the Rays, his stint in the minors with them was a relevant chapter in his tale of  significant off-field issues he overcame to reach the majors with the Rangers in 2016, but his performance dropped off the last two years.

LHP Xavier Cedeno, Brewers, projected to make $1.5 million.

LHP Dan Jennings, Brewers, projected to make $1.6 million.
