RIVERVIEW — A 44-year-old construction worker was accidentally shot and killed by his coworker at a job site on Wednesday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to the scene at about 1:45 p.m. The shooting took place at a construction site along the 8900 block of Riverlachen Way. The neighborhood is near the Alafia River.

The armed coworker is a 43-year-old man who told deputies he was getting out of his vehicle at the time. He moved his firearm from his waistband to his pocket, he told deputies, when he accidentally tripped.

His gun fired and the bullet struck his coworker, who was working on the roof of the house.

The wounded 44-year-old was taken to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. He was later pronounced dead there.

The shooter is cooperating with detectives. He told deputies the victim was a close friend of his.

The names of the shooting victim and shooter were not released by the Sheriff's Office. The agency did not say if the armed man has a concealed carry permit.

No other details about the incident were released.
