A St. Petersburg man died Saturday after running a red light and colliding with another car at the intersection of 49th Street N and 46th Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

John Burdette, 69, was driving south on 49th Street around 2:30 p.m. authorities said in a press release. At the same time, Cathy Shea, 56, was headed east on 46th Avenue. Shea had the right of way and drove into the intersection on a green light. Burdette had a red light, troopers said.

But Burdette didn't heed the signal. He crashed his 2003 Ford sedan into Shea's 2017 Ford pickup truck, troopers said. Burdette and Shea's cars were thrown across the southbound lanes of 49th Street.

Shea was unharmed in the crash, troopers said.

Burdette was taken to Northside Hospital, where he died of the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Troopers said that alcohol was not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Burdette was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.
