One day after placing cornerback Rashaan Melvin on injured reserve, the Bucs have filled out their 53-man roster by promoting former TCU receiver Skye Dawson from the practice squad.
Dawson, at 5-foot-9 and 183 pounds, is a smaller speed receiver -- he had only six touchdowns in his TCU career, but earned All-Big 12 honorable mention last year as a punt returner, averaging 9.4 yards with a long of 64. He was one of two players in the Big 12 to rank in the top five in both punt and kickoff returns -- the other was West Virginia star and Rams first-rounder Tavon Austin. Dawson will wear No. 18 for the Bucs and will battle with special-teamer Russell Shepard to be among the active 46 on Sundays.
The Bucs also tweaked their practice squad a bit, releasing tackle Randy Richards and adding two players -- safety Nick Saenz, who was with the team in preseason camp, and former Boston College tackle Emmett Cleary. And cornerback Danny Gorrer can start practicing with the team today, though his presence on the "injured reserve designated to return" list means he can't play in a game until Week 9.
