Alas, $2-per-gallon gas won't last forever

But for now, gas prices are still $2 per gallon in Tampa Bay.
Prices for gas in Tampa Bay have been at or below $2 for about a week, but that may change shortly. Pictured are gas prices in Palm Harbor Jan. 7.

Gas may still average $2 per gallon in Tampa Bay, but pump prices are headed for an uptick, according to AAA, the Auto Club Group. The state averaged $2.12 a gallon Monday, down one cent over the week, while Tampa Bay gas was $2 a gallon on average, also down one cent over the week. Gas prices will likely rise, spokesman Mark Jenkins said, because of rising crude oil prices.

"The new year has breathed new life back into the oil market," Jenkins said in a news release Monday. "The biggest increases came last week after Saudi leaders pledged to do whatever it takes to rebalance the market."

The result, he said, could be a spike of five to 10 cents in the near future. Nationally gas was $2.25 a gallon Monday.
